Officials at Bethune-Cookman University have released photos of petitions submitted by opponents of U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, and are questioning the number of petitioners and effect of their planned mobilization against the speech, scheduled to be delivered during today’s spring commencement exercises.
In a release, the school said yesterday afternoon that an alleged 60,000 petitions delivered in boxes to President Edison Jackson’s yesterday afternoon prompted a conversation with university public safety officials, and protestors being escorted off campus without incident.
We have received petitions advanced by the American Federation of Teachers, NAACP, and the Florida Education Association, all which were delivered by a Bethune-Cookman University alum, and three community residents, including Ms. Norma Bland. The petitioners arrived to the President’s Office this afternoon with six boxes that were all nearly empty and the total of which only filled a quarter of one box. Once received, the 60,000 alleged petitions were reviewed, and the University’s staff noted incomplete information and a list from change.org that reports under 6,000 supporters from people around the world.
B-CU Department of Campus Safety Chief Gregory Elder answered questions and escorted the participants off campus. No issues were reported and everyone departed peacefully.
