Delaware State Students Work to Deter Crime in Downtown Dover

Residents in and around downtown Dover, DE were recently surprised by four Delaware State University students looking to help prevent crime in the region.
Dashayna Brown, Danielle McAllister, Ruth Kotter and Eric Wright are working with the city’s ‘Lights On, Dover Strong’ program this summer to install free motion detection lighting in communities in the area, in an effort to deter trespassing and burglary in the area. DSU is an institutional partner with a coalition of public and private organizations which hope to furnish lighting for 200 homes by summer’s end.
Students said installing lights and educating the community about the program provided an invaluable perspective on community service.
“It is teaching me about humility and that sometimes the smallest thing can mean a lot,” Mr. Wright said. “This is making these homes safer.”
