  1. This is so true it begins with enrollement and HBCU’s have to change there approach in order to change the recent trends.

  2. There is nothing wrong with HBCUs seeking to attract the best and brightest students, but there is a structural problem with HBCUs when they deny admissions to the students they (k)now, and historically, have served.

Times change, HBCUs cannot survive admitting an academically marginal student body. Their brand suffers and they will get hit by the feds for having low grad rates and high default rates.
The real problem HBCUs are going to have is that there simply aren’t enough college ready black students to go around. Closure and consolidation are inevitable in the space as a result.

  3. I think it is high time that HBCUs begin to put into practice research initiatives so they can compete for a larger portion of the pie. To my Knowledge, Howard University is the only HBCU able to compete for research dollars from the federal government among other PWIs which eliminates any possibility for the remaning institutions.
I also believe that Presidents of these institutions need to do a better job at growing their endowment fund and raising other capital rather than to solely rely on governement funding. HBCU Presidents need to Dr. Norman Francis at XULA and what he’s done to grow that institution over the past 40+ years.
