Howard President Wayne Frederick to retire by June 2024

Howard University President Wayne A.I. Frederick will retire by June 2024, trustees at the school announced this afternoon.

In a letter to the campus community, the board applauded Frederick for his leadership in academic development, historic fundraising and campus expansion, performance in national rankings, and the stabilization of the Howard University Hospital.

“Dr. Frederick began as interim president in 2013 and assumed the permanent position in 2014. I join my fellow trustees in expressing my profound gratitude to Dr. Frederick for his tireless, unwavering efforts to lead our University to greater academic excellence, fiscal strength, and service to our community and country,” wrote Board Chairman Laurence Morse. “Needless to say, given his outstanding performance, the board desired that he would have chosen to remain in office longer.”

Officials say that more details about the search process and timelines will be forthcoming.
