Miles College President George French surprised nine aspiring college students last week with an offer of $10,000 scholarships to every student who chooses to enroll in the school this fall. A big deal, considering that he was speaking to a room of 10 students vying for the Tom Joyner Foundation’s full ride scholarship.
The Foundation reported on the surprise offer via Facebook, which Dr. French made during a speech to the student group during its annual Full Ride Scholarship banquet, held last week in Atlanta. The scholarship program provides one HBCU-bound high school graduate with a full scholarship covering tuition, room and board and fees for up to 10 semesters.
“You ought to be content to make sure that you are the best you can. … I want you to hold your heads up. You are somebody. At an HBCU, we treat you like family. We will be here a long time.” “You ought to be content to make sure that you are the best you can. … I want you to hold your heads up. You are somebody. At an HBCU, we treat you like family.
