Biden calls for greater equity in HBCU funding
Saying the United States never lived up to the ideals of the founding fathers that all people are created equal, President Joe Biden said one element of advancing racial equity would be to increase funding for historically Black colleges and universities as well as other minority-serving institutions.
“Just imagine how much more creative and innovative we’d be if this nation held the historically Black colleges and universities to the same … funding and resources of public universities to compete for jobs in industries of the future,” Biden said. (Inside Higher Ed)
Coppin State Alumna Nikki Jones Uses Her Voice to Champion HBCUs as Vice President of NPR
National Public Radio (NPR) executive and alumna Nikki Jones ’96, is a huge advocate for HBCUs and the role they play in the development of tomorrow’s leaders. She and her 14-year-old talk about her love of HBCUs and why they are important.
“There is a different level that is brought to you when you go to an HBCU. HBCUs prepare students to raise their voices. It prepares them to be heard,” said Nikki. “Coming out of Coppin and going into the corporate world, I was prepared to have respectful discussions. Coppin showed me what collaboration meant. It prepared me to listen to all sides of the debate,” she continued. (Coppin State University)
FAMU alumni named to key roles in Biden White House, Democratic National Committee
Florida A&M University (FAMU) alumna Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms has been named Democratic National Committee (DNC) vice-chair in charge of civic engagement and voter protection.
Bottoms is one of the FAMU alumni to play a more prominent role in Democratic Party politics and policies following the 2020 November elections. FAMU alumnus Vincent Evans was named deputy director of the Office of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs in the Office of the Vice President. (Florida A&M University)
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Lambda Chapter Alums Announce $112,500 Scholarship Endowment to Xavier
The group plans to fully fund the initiative by 2025 in recognition of the university’s centennial celebration. The inaugural endowment donors all graduated from Xavier University, and credit the institution for launching them into successful careers. The endowment was secured following more than a year of internal planning and months of discussions with Kimberly Reese, Xavier’s Associate Vice President for Institutional Advancement. The inaugural donors established the endowment as part of a larger group of more than thirty Alpha Lambda Chapter Alums from all over the United States. (Xavier University of Louisiana)
