Mississippi Valley State University President William Bynum has been named chairman of an NCAA committee charged with advising the association on challenges faced by HBCUs on academic progress requirements.
Dr. Bynum, who also serves as a member of the NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee, will head the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) and Limited-Resource Institutions Academic Advisory Group, a subcommittee charged with policy-guidance and advisement on potential deficiencies with NCAA APR standards, and why HBCUs and other smaller institutions have faced disparate punishment for falling short of APR standards for decades.
“As a former collegiate student-athlete, I believe I have a unique perspective and can offer needed insight on a number of issues that are impacting HBCUs & Limited Resource Institutions (LRIs),” said Bynum. “Teaming with Dr. Bernard Franklin and Wendy Walters, both NCAA administrators, I believe this group is poised to be a viable voice and champion for HBCUs & LRIs and their student-athletes. I am excited to continue building upon the work completed by Dr. Harold Martin, former chair and chancellor of North Carolina A&T State University; and committee members.”
Dr. Bynum lettered in football as an undergraduate at Davidson College.
