The National Science Foundation has awarded Southern University a $2.5 million S.T.E.M. research grant to renew its partnership with the Baton Rouge campus’ Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave observatory Science Education Center.
Established during the 2005-06 academic year, the NSF programs maintains Southern as a regional resource in teacher training, youth S.T.E.M outreach and advanced undergraduate and graduate-level research through 2020.
The partnership also funds system-wide S.T.E.M. initiatives, including professional development institutes at Southern’s New Orleans campus, and its docent training program held at the Shreveport campus, designed to prepare officials in S.T.E.M. community outreach and secondary exposure opportunities.
