Oakwood University is the first HBCU in Alabama and among 180 schools nationwide to be classified as a StormReady University by the National Weather Service.
The school announced the designation earlier this month, and will serve as an official Huntsville resource for weather monitoring, emergency management training and preparation, and recovery.
StormReady designation is given to schools which can establish and operate a 24-hour emergency operations center, weather monitoring technology and which offers community training on storm preparedness and emergency strategy.
Oakwood joins Jackson State, Alcorn State, Fayetteville State, Wiley College and Tennessee State as the nation’s historically black StormReady universities.
