Nearly one month after being placed on paid administrative leave following growing concerns over his outside civic memberships and an alleged sex tape, Southern University Vice-Chancellor for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management Brandon Dumas has been fired from the university, but will appeal the decision at a regularly scheduled board meeting tomorrow afternoon.
Dr. Dumas, a Southern alumnus who was a finalist for the Paine College presidency in April and has served as Southern vice-chancellor since 2012, was the subject of an online petition calling for an investigation of the division. Southern University System President Ray Belton pledged an assessment of the division, but the results of the review have not been publicized to date.
He also resigned as chairman of the East Baton Rouge Council on Aging, after reports of his alleged violation of residency rules for sitting members.
Last month, Dr. Dumas was implicated in the release of a sex tape with a graduate student and was placed on leave without explanation from university administration.
The news follows several negative occurrences for Louisiana’s flagship HBCU campus and the nation’s only historically black system. Last month, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges placed the campus on accreditation warning and faces charges of illegal grade changes and administrative wrongdoing from a former registrar.
